VEHICLE FERRY                            
Caledonian Macbrayne provide a ferry  service to and from the island.

A ferry runs from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbert, the main village on Harris, twice a day except on Sundays. There are fewer sailings in winter. It takes 1 hour 35 minutes to cross the Minch. Vehicle reservation required.

Getting to Harris via Lewis:

Although treated as two separate islands, Harris and Lewis form a single landmass, allowing you to drive from one to the other.

The main road between Stornoway (Lewis) and Tarbert (Harris) is 37 miles which takes about an hour by car or bus. 

PLANE
Stornoway Airport is only a five minute drive from the town centre. Taxis are available from the airport and regular buses from Stornoway town to Harris are easily accessible.

Crook Cottage is on the bus route from Tarbert to South Harris. Car hire facilities are also available at the airport. See the Stornoway Airport website for further details on transport available.

Airlines who provide a regular service to the island include:

  • British Airways fly to/from Stornoway twice per day from various cities in the UK. Heathrow, London City and Gatwick all fly to Stornoway via either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Any luggage for checking in, will be transferred automatically to your second aircraft during your connection.
  • Flybe operate flights to/from Stornoway Airport, Barra, Benbecula, Inverness, Glasgow, London and other destinations Monday - Saturday. Limited Sunday flights.
  • Highland Airways operate an 18-seater Island Hopper service linking Glasgow and Inverness with Stornoway and Benbecula (Monday-Saturday).
  • Eastern Airways operate between Aberdeen and Stornoway (Monday-Saturday).

VEHICLE FERRY 
A ferry sails from
Ullapool
on the mainland to Stornoway 2 or 3 times a day except Sundays. The service is slightly reduced during the winter. The crossing time is 2 hours 40 minutes. Vehicle reservation required.
