Getting There

Crook Cottage is on the Isle of Harris, which is located off the North West coast of Scotland.

If you're travelling from abroad, the nearest major Airport is Aberdeen International. Alternatively,Glasgow and the Nation's Capital, Edinburgh, both have very well served airports, and the drive through the West Highlands up to Harris is not to be missed.

BY CAR & FERRY

Access to Harris is by ferry from either Ullapool on the mainland or Uig on Skye. Caledonian MacBrayne operates both services; booking in advance is advised if you wish to cross at a certain time of day.

Uig/Tarbert Ferry - The ferry crossing from Uig is the most direct, in terms of getting to the cottage. This lands at Tarbert, which is around 10 miles form the cottage. As you disembark the ferry, follow signs for Rodel (Scottish Gaelic: Roghadal). After about 6miles, take the left turn signposted Roghadal and Skoon Art Cafe. Follow signs for Geocrab, continuing on this single-track road for another 4miles or so. Travel through the village of Geocrab, passing the fish farm on your left. Ardslave is signposted and Crook Cottage is the second house on your left.

Ullapool/Stornaway Ferry - The ferry from Ullapool will bring you onto the Isle of Lewis, into the town of Stornaway. Although a separate Island from Harris, Lewis shares the same landmass. From Stornaway, take the A859 south until you reach Tarbert, then follow the instructions above. This is a 44mile journey and takes around 1hr 20mins.

BY BUS

Scottish Citylink operates regular bus services to mainland ferry ports connecting, where possible, with ferry arrival and departure times. Buses run from most of the major cities in Scotland to the terminal at Ullapool. When you arrive in Stornaway, buses are available to Tarbert, and Buchanan Cottage is on the main bus route from Tarbert to South Harris.

BY PLANE

It is possible to fly to the Outer Hebrides, if this is preferable. Stornoway airport is only a five minute drive from the town centre. Car hire facilities and taxis are both available at the airport, and the regular bus services from Stornaway to Harris are easily accessible.

Airlines who provide a regular service to the island include:

  • British Airways - Fly to/from Stornoway twice per day from various cities in the UK. Heathrow, London City and Gatwick all fly to Stornoway via either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Any luggage for checking in, will be transferred automatically to your second aircraft during your connection.
  • FlyBe - operate flights to/from Stornoway Airport, Barra, Benbecula, Inverness, Glasgow, London and other destinations Monday - Saturday. Limited Sunday flights.
  • Eatern Airways - Operates between Aberdeen and Stornoway (Monday-Saturday).
